College of The Month

This week’s college is:

FLAGLER COLLEGE

If you were in AVID last year; you might of taken a field trip to visit Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL.

There is a lot of history behind the walls of this college, so let’s get to them.

Flagler College is a liberal arts college. Its tuition for 2006-2007  was $11,810 and its acceptance rate is an average of 25 to 30 percent.

The school is located on 19 acres of land. Flagler offers 21 majors, 26 minors and two pre-professional programs in liberal arts, education and business.

The school is also known for its Deaf Education program.

The college competes in 12 varsity sports. Their team is called the Saints.

The campus has 15 buildings; some are located a couple of blocks from the center of the campus.

There are some ghost stories in Flagler too. Legend has it that Flagler’s wife haunts the 4th floor of the Ponce de Leon Hall, which is now the girl’s dormitory. The room where they say she hung herself is boarded up, but some students still peek through the keyhole. Also, at Flagler’s funeral, which was held in front of the hall of the college (the hall with tiled floors), they had the windows opened so his spirit could “fly away”  so he couldn’t be trapped there forever. As the janitor was passing by, he saw that all the windows were opened, so he went and closed them. At that moment, people felt a big gush of wind. They say that Flagler’s spirit bounced and landed on one of the tiles. And still, to this very day, there is the face of Henry Flagler, on a certain tile, on the front-left of  the college.

Lets Hope History Doesnt Repeat Itself

Lets go back to 1976, the swine flu fiasco.  The H1N1 virus had killed 1 person.  However, this one death scared public health officials.  The U.S.  government came to the rescue and rushed out a vaccinFile:FordSwineFluShot1.jpge for the virus.  The health officials urged president Gerald Ford that every person in the U.S. be vaccinated.  This pandemic seemed closely related to the 1918 flu outbreak.  By the time the program was terminated, only 24% of the population had recieved the vaccine but 25 people had died because of it.

Now back to present day.  Since April of 2009, the H1N1 has spread world wide.   By August 30th, the virus had taken 4,560 lives world wide.  Needless to say, everyone is scared out of their wits.  The U.S. government has come to the rescue and is rushing out a vaccine for the virus (wow Deja v`u).  Even though the H1N1 is more commonly known as “swine flu”, this virus does not effect bacon (yes!) or any other pork product.

The virus is usually not that bad except people with asthma, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, or those who are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.  The virus is spread by coughing, sneezing, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the nose or mouth.  Some symptoms, which last up to a week, are very similar to those of the regular flu. They can include fever, sneezing, sore throat, coughing, headache, and muscle or joint pains. To avoid spreading the H1N1 virus, the CDC recommends that those with symptoms stay home from school, work, and crowded settings.  In general, wearing facial masks is not recommended, except in healthcare settings.

I think this is a prime example that we need healthcare reform.  In 1976, they would have every kid at the school line up in the media center to get their flu shot (with parents permission of course) for FREE (can i repeat: FREE!)!  Now, we have to go to the doctors office to get the shot and pay 15-20 bucks for it.  Plus in this economy,  15-20 bucks is a lot of money for anyone.  Also, i dont trust the vaccine after what happened in 1976.  More people died from the vaccine then from the virus itself ( now thats irony).  Now I may only be a teenager but i say, wait a couple months to get the vaccine so the CDC can work out all of the bugs unless you absolutely have to get it because of pre-exsisting conditions.

Unlikely Animal Friends

Believe it or not, animals can be friends with any species they want–just like people. It seems animals have figured out that sometimes it’s okay to be friends with someone out side of your circle. In the National Geographic Channel clip below, the hunter and prey are friends. You will notice that the lioness has lost something that meant everything to her. So it seems she accepts the onyx as a baby, not prey. If a lioness and a onyx antelope can coexist like this, perhaps humans could too! Befriending the enemy could be the way to up your popularity!

*Now veiw this clip so you can completely grasp my concept.

Animals effect us in everyday life. They show us how the circle of life goes and teach us the cycle of the food chain.  Since they seem to be breaking all the barriers, maybe we should follow them in this change too. If a gorilla, the top primate, can hang out with a dog than why cant we follow in their brave efforts to accept others?

* To meet the dog and the gorilla buddies click on this Clip.

Next there is Wallace Collito, who adopts a cat, and a crow keeps coming into the house to see the cat for four years!  The crow and the cat interact in a friendly and playful way. They  fight, but no one thought the crow would ever leave because their bond was so strong.   Eventually,  the crow does go away but it’s neat to see their friendship blossom. Cats will do weird things sometimes, so I can’t blame the crow for leaving? Birds are meant to fly… So fly away little crow!!!

* To see the cat and the crow playing click on this Clip

Finally, I will tell you about Tara the elephant and Bella the dog. They are friends but the coolest part is the dog is small.  I know you’re thinking a dog is always smaller than a elephant–that’s your smarticles at work–but this dog is a mini.  Bella gets hurt but recovers and roams free with Tara happily.

In conclusion, we should all learn from from these crazy animals.  Anyone can find friendship in the smallest packages or the biggest.  Just don’t underestimate others.

 JUST FOR FUN!!!!!

Something about cats are that there’s a website it’s http://www.monpa.com/dwc/ This website shows you example of crazy but cool cat behavior. Just like the video so enjoy it.

Even though University of Florida and Texas had a by week, they’re still where their suppose to be!  And I don’t know what’s up  with Alabama with a final score that’s never lower than 30!  This is the first time in Alabama football history! Alabama is 5-0, their lowest score being 34 and there highest score being 53.  But the game last week was amazing. 38-20, Roland McClain led defense all the way with 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Not to mention sophomore Mark Ingram ran 140 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns against Kentucky.

THE KING OF POP!

michael-jackson A man, a father, a son, a global icon.  Michael Jackson was a regular person with a talent.  A talent that sucked people in and informed the world that we are good and bad and can be both.

I  shall  forever  remember  Michael  See full size imageJackson  for  his  moonwalk  and  the charity work that he did, and  the  fact  that  he  was  a  really  talented musician  who  wrote  and  composed  almost  all of  his  songs.

I know I’m one of those who will miss him. Michael Jackson is the BEST ever! Nobody can ever replace him. There can never be a second Michael Jackson. His musical legacy will live on for centuries to come. He’s a pop legend and will always be. He was one of the greatest singers of our generation.

He was the one who brought love and joy into our lives. I don’t care if he is black or white. His music is colorless and universal, even the illiterate country bumpkin in the most remote village in the world know who he is. That’s how popular he is.

MJ was a kind-hearted soul who didn’t deserve to die young. “It’s a pity that in death, few people remember him for his humanitarian efforts” (he contributed to 36 charities in his lifetime and at least $350,000,000 (source: yahoo answers). What’s more, he broke 13 Guinness World Records and won 19 Grammys in his career.  Some say he was no ordinary man, he’s a superhero.  MJ haters are mostly those who were brainwashed by the media, with its constant portrayal of MJ as a freako. My personal opinion is that he wass not a pedophile at all.  He loved children because he himself was a child at heart.

Listen to this, if you have not:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1_2yHdGF0U

Poor Michael, he didn’t have a proper childhood.  I urge all MJ haters to please leave him alone.

Yale Student Killing

A candlelight ceremony was held recently at Yale University for deceased student

Anne Le, found on her wedding day. This 24 year old student was a graduate in

pharmacology, or the study of how drugs affect people. Her body was found in a

basement wall of a Yale Lab. Her roommates believe that a psychopath wanted to

prove her wrong in her sense of security that she described in an article months

before. It may be a sign to be wary on campus, or just a random act of hate, but

this is a serious issue for views on Yale, not only with security, but with the

student body itself. These students were shocked at this student’s death. Most

described her as outgoing and kind to everyone she met, but having a passion for

her work.

Raymond Clark III, 24, kept his head down during the

three-minute appearance in the trial for the suffocation death of Le, as he is

the only suspect at this time. The judge sent him to jail placing bail at 3

million dollars. This ‘Control Freak,’ as a law enforcement officer called him, viewed his

lab as territory. That and 250 pieces of DNA relating to Raymond in the lab

relates his as the only one who could do such an inhuman act.

Raymond Clark, 24, was arrested and charged with murder, police said. His bond was set at $3 million.

This has triggered nervousness all across the country, and as the message is clear, some

people still fear for their loved ones. This tragedy tells us to always stay

safe, on or off campus, your life may be at risk.

Meet the Hype Staff

The Hype is back!  That means both new staff members and new articles for the Howard Hype.  Unfortunately, some people don’t know what that means.  Some might ask: who are they or what do they do? Well, who better to answer these questions than the staff members themselves?  There are fourteen members on the staff: two sixth graders, two seventh graders and ten eighth graders. Each carefully selected by the teacher of the class, Ms. S.  On staff, we do all kind of things, from writing articles for the Hype to working on the yearbook, which, by the way, is going to be awesome!

The staff was asked some generel questions, their favorite college, and why they joined the Hype staff. Here are the answers:

“My name is Alex V. I love to train my pet and teach it new tricks. When I’m ready for college I want to go to Yale University. I joined the Hype staff because it looked fun.”

“I’m Fitzroya N. My favorite color is purple and I love to play in games. I joined Hype staff because I love to write. I want to go to a Florida University.”

“My name is Angelica M. I love texting my friends and going on MySpace. I joined because I love taking pictures of things. I’m either going to UCF or NYU.”

“I’m Sam H.  I’m going to an air force or naval academy to serve my country.  I spend most of my time watching T.V and I don’t know why I joined the Hype staff, but I’m glad I did.”

“My name is Alexis R.  My favorite color is green and I like to eat and sleep.  I joined Hype staff because my brother was in it last year, and it looked pretty fun. Plus, Ms. S likes me. I’m going to the University of Florida. GO GATORS!!!”

“Hi, I’m Alexyz H.  I like rock climbing and practicing my trumpet.  I joined the staff for many reasons, I enjoy handling technology. Also, I want to express my love for photography. I’m going to Rollins.”

“I’m Harrison.  I joined the Hype staff because I wanted to make the year one to remember.  I want to go to Harvard.”

“What’s up! I’m Billy F.  I mostly play video games and watch T.V, but I do also like talking to my friends.  I joined the Hype staff because it looked fun and how cool would it be to make the yearbook this year! I don’t know where I want to go yet for college but it’s probably going to be UCF”.

“My name is Stephanie Lee. I like dancing, shopping and swimming. I joined because I thought it would be a fun and new experience for me. I’m going to UCF.”

“I’m Reggie S.  I like playing basketball outside. I joined the staff because I like taking pics.  I want to go to the UCF College.”

“I’m Ashleigh B. I like to play volleyball, talk and hang with my friends. I joined because I love to write.  I want to go to FAMU!”

“My name is Jackie B. I love to text on my cell phone.  I joined to develop my skills and knowledge in journalism and photography.  I’m either going to UCF or BCU.”

“I’m Carl K. I like to race and watch racing.  I joined the staff to be part of the school and know it better.  I’m going to UCF.”

” My name is Cami B. I love horseback riding. I joined the staff because it sounded like a lot of fun. I think I’m going to UCF.”

So that’s a little on the Hype staff on the Hype staff.  Everyone loves what they do and are always willing to do it.  I can honestly say this is one of the most fun things you can do!  We’re giving it our all this year and it’s going to be a great one!

Look for us with our camera and you may end up in on the Hype site or in the 2009/2010 HMS Yearbook!!

Versus: Young Money Entertainment- Drake vs Lil Wayne

Young Money Entertainment  is an American label founded by the greatest rapper, Lil Wayne a.k.a Weezy F. Baby. The label is an imprint of Cash Money Records. In 2009 the newest ”rest Rapper”, Drake a.k.a Drizzy, signed a  joint venture between Cash Money and Young Money. In our opinion, Young Money will take over! This group is very amazing. Young Money is a fresh group, so let’s sit back and see how they will take over the radios with their music.

Lil Wayne made #2 in the “MT V’s Best Rappers Of 09″ “. In my opinion Angelica, Lil Wayne is a very intelligent man in the music industry. He has been around for years , and will be for a long time to come. Lil Wayne to me is better then Drake because, if there was no Lil Wayne there would be no Drake. Also, Lil Wayne has worked with the best artists. Lil Wayne  has the best swag out their right now! Lil Wayne has better  lyrics than Drake. Drake is a new rapper. Lil Wayne actually raps about important things like huricane Katrina, and George Bush not doing anything about it . The song was called “Georgia Bush”.Lil Wayne actually worked his way to the top. Thats why to me he is the best rapper alive!

-Jacqueline B
In my opinion Jackie,
I think Drake should be ” the best rapper alive! I think Drake, ” Drizzy ” is a very talented young man . I think when he really gets to the TOPLil Wayne can’t do anything! I feel like Lil Wayne should sit back and relax because Drake is coming there . He is very very talented but most people dont think so . Guess what Jackie… Lil Wayne better watch out! Don’t worry when there is no more Lil Wayne, Drake will be taking his SPOT! I know Jackie… if it wasn’t for Lil Wayne, Drake wouldn’t be just a rapper, but the best one .
Drake’s real name is Aubrey Drake Graham . He originally became known for playing character Jimmy Brookes on the TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation. I love watching that show because, so much drama happens in the school . As a rapper he is known as Drake A.k.a Drizzy . Drake Continued to recognize a close relationship with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment before officially signing with the record label in June 2009 . I think that was a great thing for Drake to do because Young Money Entertainment is a great group to start with . His First studio album , Thank Me Later , is expected to be released in the year of 2010 . I can’t wait for Drake’s album to come out in 2010 . I know I’m  not the only one who is waiting either! =)

NCAA top 25! – Gators Most Definitely Went CHOMP!

The #1 ranked Gators had a 31-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and ended with a score of 41-7.  The game was great except for the huge hit Tim Tebow suffered, which knocked him out of the game.  But fortunately, he has a bye week to recover for the LSU game!

Ranked #2, Texas won their game 64-7.  Texas’ head coach Mack Brown said, “It was a dominating win. It was fun to see our guys play hard, and they played well in all three phases. When you force turnovers like that, games get out of control and you have the big kicking game plays for field position.” Just as a fun fact, Texas and Florida are the top 2 producing NFL athlete states in the United States… watching these games, that didn’t surprise me!

I bet Alabama is very proud of their quarterback Greg McElroy with 291 yards, combined with a strong defensive effort.   This launched Alabama to #3. Alabama had a 35-7 win over Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference opener for the Crimson Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Any other information wanted on the top 5 ranked schools and their games, or any other top 25 teams, just click on the college on the chart below.  It’s a direct link to the college’s sports website!

Texting- The Teen Phenomenom

Everyone knows old SMS (what you and I call “texting” today)  like LOL, L8R, IDK.  Here are some that are not quite as common: 4YEO- for your eyes only, 4E- forever and LIC- like I care.  Most adults don’t understand some of this… and that’s a good thing for us. SMSing  was innovated by a man named Mr. Makkonen for abbreviating words.

He used it for a GSM digital mobile phone in 1984 in a pizzeria in Copenhagen with two other friends, Mr. Tiainen and Mr. Tapiola during a conference of mobile communication’s future.  Who would have thought that was the way SMSing came into the world? I think it actually it could have been discovered by other people, but it did come to be international by him.

It has helped us and enhanced our way of life.  “Signs of a youth population increasingly hooked on text messaging abound,” says ABC News. “Sixty-five percent of people between the ages of 18 and 28 send text messages, nearly double the population average of 35 percent, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.” Average teenagers SMS at least 300 times a day.

Texting is good in some cases, but in others it’s bad and even deadly.  We kids think texting is just innocent, but in some cases it may be dangerous.  Last year 6,000 kids were killed in America when texting and driving, or killed by a person texting.
