World’s LARGEST Pumpkins!!!!
The world’s largest pumpkin, weighing 1,725 pounds, belongs to Christy Harp. This year she and her husband had a contest to see who could grow a larger pumpkin. ”Last year he beat me by 200 pounds. This year I beat him by 400 pounds. Very good year! My pumpkin, my side of the patch! We separate the patch and never step foot on the other side!” Christy says.
Christy Harp, married to Nick Harp, is a 27 year old math teacher at Jackson High School. Christy holds the record for the ‘World’s Largest Pumpkin.” She found this out at the Ohio Valley Pumpkin Growers contest in Canfield Township in Mahoning County this past October. Harp was worried because there were rumors that there were two other GIANT pumpkins in town.
Nick went to watch the weigh-ins of those two pumpkins while Christy was teaching. One pumpkin, grown by Don Young, weighed in at 1,658- thats a difference of 67 pounds!!!! (That was close). The other pumpkin, grown by Bob Leggett, weighed in at 1,635.5 pounds- another close call. Nick called Christy while she was teaching to give her the good news.
”I was more nervous about that call than all the stress from the season combined,” she said.
She believes it should now be smooth sailing for her pumpkin to hold onto the record this season, although she has recently heard rumors about a big pumpkin that might be entered in an upcoming contest in Finland. Her huge gourd has gotten worldwide attention.
On October 26, the Stark County couple and their 1,725 pound pumpkin were featured on NBC’s Today Show. They drove the pumpkin to Connecticut and NBC had a flatbed truck pick it up at 2 a.m. and place it in Rockefeller Plaza for the television show.
If her pumpkin remains the world record holder, she will receive a $2,000 prize at the International Pumpkin Growers Seminar next March in Niagara Falls, Canada. What will happen to her pumpkin now? You probably ask.
Harp says, pumpkin carver Scott Cully of Oregon plans to carve it , either in Stark County or Columbus .
