The current Supreme Court session is deciding  a case, Schwarzenegger vs The Electronic Merchants Association (EMA), that will decide the future sales of mature video games to young teens. The mature rated video games should not be sold to children. I think that if kids are not allowed by their parents to play a certain video game because of obscene  and/or violent content, they should not be permitted to buy it. The Supreme Court has not yet made a judgment on this case. They are deciding if this case violates first amendment rights. This case has been going on for a very long time, and has been struck down by lower courts. Therefore, the case is now on steps of   the Supreme Court.
Amendment I of the U.S. Constitutions states the following: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
There are a lot of issues involved in this case, but a lot of these issues have not been resolved. For example, is violence bad for kids? Well, the evidence is inconclusive. Some people may think that if their kids play these video games that they would imitate these actions, such as using vulgar language or breaking the law.
The Supreme Court Justices have a tough decision. The EMA already regulates the content by placing the icon M for mature rated video games and if the Supreme Court upholds the California law, they would also have to regulate movies too.
The Supreme court has not yet came to a conclusion to this case but as soon as they do I am sure that when they do it will be all over the news. Do you think that local video game stores should not be able to sell mature rated video games to kids?
