Testing on the FCAT can be very difficult

FCAT is coming fast and many students are feeling overwhelmed. Yet there is no reason to worry because there are plenty of testing tips to help you. These tips are mostly focused on the reading section, but some could still apply to math and science.

1. Number the paragraphs in the reading passage. How it helps: By numbering the paragraphs, you get a better idea of how long the passage is and how much time you should spend on it.

2.Read the questions and underline main focus points. How it helps: This gets to the main idea of the question and focuses out excess words.

3. Read the title of text and make a prediction on what it is about. How it helps: It can help formulate ideas in your brain and get the brain going.

4. Read titles of charts, tables, and diagrams. Read captions. How it helps: Same as the previous, a warm up of sorts.

5. Read and mark text as you read. How it helps: Narrows down the passage, makes it shorter to read. Gets the gist of the reading.

6. Eliminate any answer options that you are sure are 100% wrong. How it helps: Process of elimination. Narrows down the answers, the more you know are wrong, the less you know are right.

7. Go back into the text and find textual evidence to prove the answer you think is correct. How it helps: Finding proof concretes your decision of what to answer. It makes you far less indecisive.

8. Read all answer options to make sure you have made the best selection. How it helps: Sometimes looking back on something, you can catch mistakes you may have made.

9. If you get stuck on a question, skip it. How it helps: You may have a different frame of mind if you go back to it later.

10. Go back and answer any that you have skipped. How it helps: It is better to guess on a question, than not to answer it at all.

Hopefully, these tips will help you with any anxiety that you might have. Remember, the FCAT does not decide everything. Just relax and do your best.
