The Mayor’s MLK Humanitarian Award is a very special honor to receive. It promotes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of rights for all races. Every year one student from one school in Orlando gets picked to represent his/her school. It teaches kids of Dr. King’s dream.

To get in the program you have to show morals and characteristics of Dr. King to all people, like kindness and helpfulness and everything else. It’s not that hard if you wake up every morning with a smile on your face!

You also have to do projects that give back to the community. Just like he did. Some of the projects are like spreading mulch in a playground and other things like that. Other things you do are parades and a candle light vigil to honor him.

The latest Howard Middle School student that won was 8th grader Billy Flowers. He said, “I was chosen because I showed good characteristics and had good grades.” I asked him what the experience was like and he said, “It was great. I had a fun time doing the parade and everything else. I also learned some things about Martin Luther King Jr.”

The prizes are really great. Some of them include two tickets to Disney, and two tickets to Universal Studios! Also, a one hundred dollar gift card to Wal-Mart! The prizes are a great reason to try and get the award. If that’s not enough, you also get a great awards dinner! I got to go to it. It was yummy! So try your best to be good and you can win some great prizes!
